New Fund to Support Student Needs!
Dorothy (Lee) Day Special Needs Education Fund

March 2025 ~ Dorothy (Lee) Day was the youngest of six children born to Thomas and Florence Lee. She spent her childhood and school years in Carberry. She was a hardworking and successful student and graduated from Carberry High School in 1949. Dorothy’s mother hoped she would stay in Carberry and find a job, but Dorothy had other plans. She was going to be a teacher! Dorothy fulfilled her dream, having a rewarding career as a teacher in Hallboro, Alexander, Minto, Brandon, Flin Flon and Dauphin. Dorothy retired in 1987 and passed away at the age of 93 in October 2024.

Family and church were pillars for Dorothy. She was the last of her generation in the family, and the historian. She tried very hard to stay in touch with all of her nieces, nephews and extended family members. She encouraged the family to visit in person and by phone call and enjoyed as many reunions and get-togethers as she could.

Dorothy loved travelling, golf, skiing, tennis, curling, badminton, hiking, walking, and just about any activity that got her off the couch and outdoors.

Dorothy was an educator, a teacher, and a mentor for many students. She also motivated several of her nephews and nieces to get into the teaching profession or pursue higher education in other areas. Dorothy truly touched the lives of those around her.

Dorothy’s legacy will live on in the hearts of many, and through the Dorothy (Lee) Day Special Needs Education Fund at Carberry and Area Community Foundation. This fund was created to provide additional equipment, devices, supplies, supports, and any other purposes that the Carberry and Area Community Foundation board of directors see fit, for students with special needs within the educational system in the Carberry and Area Community Foundation service area.

“The Dorothy (Lee) Day Special Needs Education Fund, like many other Carberry and Area Community Foundation funds, strengthens the community”, said Dorothy’s nephew, David Piper. “Leaving behind a legacy of helping young people, especially those in need, would have made her proud”.

Dorothy and the entire Lee family have spent most of their lives in Carberry and Dorothy’s family believes she would be pleased to know that the Dorothy (Lee) Day Special Needs Education Fund has been established to be able to give back to the community that was so important to her and her family members. “We have another aunt, Edna Lee, who has had a fund established in her name for some time (the Edna Lee Memorial Seniors Activity Fund). Our family is proud to spread the word of Carberry and Area Community Foundation,” said David Piper.

Grants from the Dorothy (Lee) Day Special Needs Education Fund will be available beginning in the spring of 2026 and donations to this fund are graciously accepted at any time.
